A Note From Rich

The pottery has been busy as ever and I am getting ready for my fall line up. For years I have been trying to get back to Hobbs, NM where I grew up for a pottery show and it will finally happen this September 10 thanks to my sisters who still live there. I also expect to be at Santa Fe Fiesta over Labor Day weekend, Las Cruces Renaissance Faire, Nov 5-6, and Tucson Dec 9-12.

My annual production can only support so many events and unfortunately I had to omit 4th of July in Flagstaff in order to go to Hobbs. If you are used to shopping with me at Wheeler Park and you can’t make it to Tucson either, feel free to call or email me if you would like to come by my shop in Concho or have something shipped to you.

Almost all of my production this year has been raw clay work, but my glaze cycle will be ramping up. I’ll be back later with some photos when I open the kiln. Til then, happy summer to you.

BIG THANKS to All our Customers and Pottery Fans!

We truly appreciate your your patronage throughout the year! Whether you were a first time shopper or have returned year after year, we owe our success to you. Thank you! We are wishing Joyous Holidays to everyone and a very Happy New Year!

WINTER BREAK for the Pottery

For the past several years, I’ve been back at the wheel the day after New Year’s. In trying to keep production high, I’ve gotten behind on some shop maintenance that I can’t let go any longer. My shop will be closed from Dec. 11 thru February so that I can complete these important tasks and prepare for another year of pottery making. Shipping will be suspended during this time, but rest assured that new pottery will be available as soon as I get my first glaze fire of the year.

Visiting the Pottery Shop

We welcome visitors to our working studio and pottery shop in Concho, AZ. Here’s some information you might find helpful before planning your trip.

Clayman at Work

Our shop is a full-time working studio with Rich Hepp at the wheel–potter’s wheel, that is. His pottery is a one-man operation. Rich does everything from stacking tons of clay boxes to unloading the finished pots from the kiln–and everything in between.

We have a small showroom attached to the studio. We are not a “retail storefront,” but there is always plenty of pottery to see. Our stock varies since most of our sales take place at fine craft fairs like the events listed above. The big bonus of visiting the shop is you get to meet the “clayman” himself and see where his wares are made.

Call Ahead

Call ahead to find out when we’ll be opening the kiln–it’s sort of like opening a gift–prepare to be surprised. If there’s something particular you’re looking for, we can give you an idea of what’s in stock before you make the trip. We are located in Concho, AZ.

Call 928-275-1582 or email info@ConchoCreekPottery.com before you visit to get directions.

Ever Wonder Where a Mug Starts Its Life?

It’s always been a challenge to explain how pottery is made. At various times, I’ve taken my wheel out to shows to demonstrate…but throwing at the wheel is just a small part of the process. Occasionally people come by the shop for a demo. Most people are amazed that it takes at least 3 weeks to make a mug–and there’s really no way to to show it all in a demo.

I’m going to be posting some photos of the pottery-making process periodically. If you are interested, take a look at my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/ConchoCreekPottery/307103519374610. It may surprise you to see what that mug looks like before it is “born.”

Shopping on Etsy

Most people shop with us at craft fairs across Arizona and New Mexico. Those who can’t make it out to events may call or email to order pottery to be shipped to them. We now offer a third option to showcase our in-stock items that can be shipped immediately–an online storefront at Etsy.com. Etsy offers a convenient website for artisans to sell their handmade crafts. On our Etsy site, you will find a variety of mugs and kitchenware with detailed descriptions and photos. Each item includes height, width, and volume measurements as well as care and use notes.

Great weekend in Tucson!

The 4th Avenue Winter Street Fair was a weekend to remember! We had our booth set up near the corner of 4th Avenue and 4th Street which provided a great vantage point for all the colorful festivities. We saw a statistic that claimed a half million visitors throughout the weekend–and it’s easy to believe when seeing the thick crowds even on Friday.

We appreciate everyone who stopped by to chat, make a purchase, or put in an order for 2013. You helped us toward a great end to a great year and we owe our success to all of you. Thank you and see you in the Spring. RICH

2011 Winter Street Fair a Success

Tucson fair goers were out in full force for 4th Avenue Winter Fair. The weather was mild and just perfect for strolling through the old town where over 400 crafters were offering their wares. There were numerous activities to keep the children amused as well as tasty food choices for everyone.

Mugs have always been a big seller in the Tucson crowd–and as anticipated, we just about sold out of most mug sizes. The XL mug at $18 seems to be most popular. It holds about 20 ounces and a lot of folks use them for iced tea. Of course, they are also great in the freezer for frosted drinks.

For Spring, I’ll have an even better selection of all sizes and colors of mugs, as well as pie plates, spoon jars, soup and serving bowls, and the much-loved sponge holder. We’ll have a double-wide booth to accommodate all the extra pottery. Come by booth 715-717 and say “hi”–you just may find the mug you’ve been searching for.

Hope to see you,
RICH

Thank You, Renaissance Faire 2011

We are home after a fantastic weekend in Las Cruces. High winds and cold didn’t stop fans of the Renaissance Faire from enjoying the festivities at Young Park on Saturday. We made the best of it and were rewarded with a gorgeous sunny Sunday.

It was great to catch up with so many friends during the Faire. I really enjoyed hearing all the news of your lives. If I missed you or to stay in touch, don’t hesitate to drop me a line at Rich@ConchoCreekPottery.com.

Many folks told me about a mug they’ve been using for 10, or 15, or even 30 years! A few people brought in favorite pieces to match or replace. If you didn’t find what you wanted at the show, just let me know and I’ll try to help.

I’m sending a huge Thank You to all of you for contributing to my success at Renaissance Faire. I really appreciate your patronage and look forward to keeping in touch. If you happen to be heading west on a trip, we’d love to have you stop in at our Concho, AZ ranch. We have lots of big sky and plenty of room to play.

Big Thanks,
RICH

Production in Full Swing, Fall 2011

Rich Hepp has re-opened his pottery in Concho, AZ after 10 years on the East coast. Concho Creek Pottery is carrying on the tradition of quality wheel-thrown stoneware that began in Las Cruces, NM with Robledo Mountain Pottery in 1983. Production is in full swing to prepare for Dona Ana’s Renaissance ArtsFaire on November 5th and 6th. A second show is slated for December 9, 10, and 11 at 4th Avenue Winter Street Fair in Tucson, AZ.

A Word from the Potter

Hi Friends,

It’s great to have my hands back in clay after closing shop in Pennsylvania a few years ago. We have a beautiful new location in the high desert of Arizona just a few miles from the NM border. After an extensive shop renovation, I began throwing pots in September and will have a great selection for the upcoming shows.

I hope you have a chance to stop by my booth and say Hi. I am looking forward to catching up with ALL my Southwest amigos. See you at the Faire.
